With one major exception (Christian Yelich), the Brewers are on the cusp of getting its principle contributors healthy for the stretch run, including DL Hall (activated Aug. 11, then optioned Aug. 12) and Bryan Hudson (activated Aug. 12). Here's the latest on Milwaukee's injuries:
On the Brewers' short-term injured list
Christian Yelich, outfielder (lower back inflammation)
The Brewers lost their best player for a prolonged period of time. Yelich left the game July 23 in Chicago and seemed to be battling the back issue out of the all-star break. Though the back issue has popped up routinely for Yelich in recent years, he said the next step was to decide "what's going to be best for the near future and into the future," which ominously sounded like a lengthy absence, although there has since been some optimism he can return in September. Yelich was in the midst of a career renaissance at age 32 and started the all-star game.
- 10-DAY INJURED LIST: July 24
- ELIGIBILE TO RETURN: When healthy
- STATS: 73 games, .315 batting average, .909 OPS, 11 homers, 42 RBIs.
Trevor Megill, relief pitcher (lower back pain)
In a particularly disastrous week for Brewers injuries, Megill joined Bryan Hudson, Christian Yelich and Rob Zastryzny as new casualties over a seven-day window. Megill has been electric this year, serving as the de facto closer with Devin Williams out, though Williams just returned July 28. But he could be back on the hill, perhaps in a minor-league rehab start and perhaps even the majors, during the week of Aug. 11. He threw to batters before the Brewers game Aug. 12 and was slated for a rehab assignment on Aug. 15.
- 15-DAY INJURED LIST: July 24
- ELIGIBILE TO RETURN: When healthy
- STATS: 35 games, 2.41 ERA, 1.040 WHIP, 40 strikeouts in 34 innings, 20 saves
Blake Perkins, outfielder (right calf strain)
The switch-hitting outfielder has been a steady presence on the Brewers this season but wound up on the injured list after a series against the Reds. It allowed the team to recall left-handed batter Tyler Black. Black initially joined the team as insurance in case Perkins went on the injured list, which happened close to game time, indicating that he was close to playing through it. Manager Pat Murphy said Aug. 13 that it wasn't expected to be season-ending.
- 10-DAY INJURED LIST: Aug. 12
- ELIGIBILE TO RETURN: Aug. 22
- STATS: 90 games, .257 batting average, .693 OPS, six homers, 34 RBIs, 17 stolen bases
Hoby Milner, relief pitcher (left shoulder impingement)
Milner has been unable to replicate his success of the last couple years, and he's in the midst of a roster crunch with fellow lefties DL Hall, Bryan Hudson and Rob Zastryzny having success and nearing a healthy return, not to mention Jared Koenig entrenched on the roster. He's been burned by bad luck but has lately been surrendering hard contact. He was placed on the injured list when Hall was activated.
- 15-DAY INJURED LIST: Aug. 9
- ELIGIBILE TO RETURN: Aug. 24
- STATS: 51 games, 4.92 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 52 strikeouts in 53 innings
Rob Zastryzny, relief pitcher (left elbow tendinitis)
The big lefty has been effective in limited work for the Brewers, but he joins Milwaukee's rotating wheel of pitching injuries.
- 15-DAY INJURED LIST: July 26
- ELIGIBILE TO RETURN: When healthy
- STATS: 9 games, 1.17 ERA, four hits, five strikeouts, 0.652 WHIP.
On the 60-day injured list
Enoli Paredes, relief pitcher (right forearm tendonitis)
Paredes has worked mostly low leverage situations but has executed beautifully since being recalled from Class AAA Nashville, looking like an unexpected boon to the bullpen much like Jared Koenig. And in short order, both were placed on the injured list while sporting ERAs below 2.00. Koenig has returned, but Paredes remains out.
He'll was slated to begin a rehab assignment Aug. 16, but he was placed on the 60-day injured list on Aug. 11 when DL Hall returned, ruling him out for the rest of August.
- 60-DAY INJURED LIST: July 3
- ELIGIBILE TO RETURN: Sept. 1
- STATS: 14 games, 1-0 record, 1.08 ERA, 1.020 WHIP
Oliver Dunn, third baseman (back)
Dunn had initially been optioned back to Class AAA Nashville but then was recalled and placed on the injured list with a disc issue in his back. The rookie has struggled to acclimate quickly this season, but he hasn't been helped by infrequent playing time. He was scheduled to miss at least a month and was bumped to the 60-day injured list when the team moved Brewer Hicklen onto the 40-man roster.
- 60-DAY INJURED LIST: June 26
- ELIGIBLE TO RETURN: August 25
- STATS: 41 games, .221 batting average, .597 OPS, seven RBIs
Robert Gasser, starting pitcher (left flexor strain)
The Brewers have won all five starts in which the rookie Gasser has pitched, but news emerged June 3 that he had some elbow soreness. That was ominous news for a pitcher who also began the season on the shelf with a bone spur in that same throwing elbow. On June 20, Gasser revealed he was opting for Tommy John surgery, and he'll be out for 12 to 14 months.
- 60-DAY INJURED LIST: June 2
- OUT FOR SEASON
- STATS: Five starts, 2-0 record, 2.57 ERA, 1.036 WHIP
J.B. Bukauskas, relief pitcher (right lat strain)
Bukauskas was the first player called up to the big-league team in 2024 but didn't stay long and was quickly shuffled to the 60-day injured list. He started a rehab assignment, but Murphy indicated June 16 that he suffered a setback, so his timetable became murky. He pitched in the Arizona complex and has multiple scoreless appearances under his belt at Nashville, but he was hit by a comebacker Aug. 9 and removed from that outing.
- 60-DAY INJURED LIST: April 14
- ELIGIBLE TO RETURN: When healthy
- STATS: Six games, 0-0 record, 1.50 ERA, 0.667 WHIP
Wade Miley, starting pitcher (torn UCL)
Miley had a strong 2023 for the Brewers and was brought back on a one-year deal but required Tommy John surgery to repair the torn UCL in his throwing elbow. Miley will be 38 at next year's spring training but said he wants to try to return to baseball again next year.
- 60-DAY INJURED LIST: April 22
- OUT FOR SEASON
- STATS: two starts, 0-1 record, 6.43 ERA, 1.429 WHIP
Brandon Woodruff, starting pitcher (surgery on right anterior capsule)
Woodruff was lost with a shoulder injury before the 2023 playoffs and ruled out for 2024, prompting the Brewers to make the difficult decision to non-tender Woodruff in the offseason. But the Brewers were able to re-sign him with the possibility that he's back in 2025.
- 60-DAY INJURED LIST: March 29
- OUT FOR SEASON
- STATS: None in 2024
Also of note
Abner Uribe, relief pitcher (right knee tear)
Uribe isn't on the 26-man roster but figures prominently in the Brewers plans, but he needed knee surgery to repair a lateral meniscus tear and is now going to miss the rest of the season. Uribe struggled in the big leagues this year and faces a four-game suspension once he's activated.
STATS: 14 games, 2-2 record, 6.91 ERA, 1.884 WHIP
Jeferson Quero, catcher (torn labrum)
The top catching prospect on the 40-man roster suffered a season-ending dislocated shoulder diving back into first base in the first inning of the Class AAA Nashville season. He had surgery and will miss all of 2024.
