Millions enter New York's Affordable Housing Lottery each year, though only a select few are fortunate enough to land a low-cost place in America's busiest city.
What is the New York Affordable Housing Lottery
The New York City Housing Lottery is a program run by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development and the New York City Housing Development Corporation.

The lottery aims to provide affordable and rent-controlled housing opportunities for low- to moderate-income New Yorkers.
Developers set aside a portion of their buildings to participate in the lottery, which will become available to prospective tenants at below market price.
Applications are sent by mail or run online through New York City's Housing Connect portal.

Entrants are assessed based on income and household size, as well as other criteria which vary for each open listing. Eligible applicants are then selected based on a random lottery system, before being invited to interview. If successful, they will be offered an available unit based on their lottery number and preferences.
Natasha Kersey, deputy press secretary for New York City's department of Housing Preservation & Development, spoke to Newsweek about the impact of the project.

"HPD's Housing Connect Lottery is instrumental in providing thousands of families with new affordable housing each and every year," Kersey said. "In 2023 alone, the city achieved a record-breaking milestone by connecting nearly 15,000 households to affordable homes."
However, the number of applicants each month far exceeds the number of available properties, and so New Yorkers are encouraged to apply for as many opportunities as possible.
