Recipe Highlights

  • Matcha latte ice cubes are so easy to make using matcha green tea, water, and sweetened condensed milk (my trick in creating less separation between the matcha and water).
  • They’re cooling and delicious. Put a few matcha ice cubes into a cup and pour milk to make instant iced matcha latte!
  • No special matcha tools like a bamboo whisk are needed to make this recipe. All you need is a co*cktail shaker or a jar with a tight lid.

Ingredient Notes

Matcha Ice Cubes - Oh, How Civilized (2)
  • Matcha: To get bright green matcha latte ice cubes, you need good quality matcha. Look to spend$20 – $30 regardless of whether the package is labeled ceremonial or culinary grade. If you get poor quality matcha, the color of the ice cubes will be a dull green, almost brown.
  • Water: Better water makes a better drink so always use filtered water for tea.
  • Sweetened condensed milk: My secret ingredient to sweeten tea lattes. It’s milk and sugar in one.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Matcha Ice Cubes - Oh, How Civilized (4)
  1. Combine ingredients in a co*cktail shaker. Shake.
    Shake vigorously to mix well.
  2. Pour matcha latte into ice cube trays. Freeze.

Expert Tips

  • Don’t use more sweetened condensed milk than what the recipe calls for since it won’t freeze properly due to the high sugar content.
  • The matcha will settle to the bottom of the ice cube tray as it freezes so seeing the gradation is natural.
  • The smaller the ice cubes, the faster they’ll melt in milk.
  • Ice cubes will be good in the freezer for up to 2 months. After that time, the quality and flavor won’t be as good.
  • To make an iced matcha latte, put ice cubes into a cup and pour milk (any kind) on top. As the ice cubes melt, the drink will turn into an iced matcha latte.
  • Instead of freezing the matcha latte into ice cubes, pour it into popsicle molds to make matcha popsicles.

Questions You May Have

Is there caffeine in matcha ice cubes?

Yes, there’s caffeine in matcha so there’s caffeine in the ice cubes.

Why does my matcha latte ice cubes look brown and not green?

Using a less expensive matcha (under $15) means the green color won’t be as bright. Go for a higher quality matcha that’s in the $20-$30 range.

Can I use a blender to mix all the ingredients?

You can, but I’ve found that the clean-up can take longer than making the recipe so I like using the co*cktail shaker.
