HOUSTON (KIAH)—Studies show that school meals are critical to student success . With so many students depending on school meals to eat, several school districts including Katy ISD wanted to make sure meals were accessible even during the summer.
Katy ISD is offering free breakfast and lunch to all children aged 18 and under, regardless of if they’re a student within the district. Locations and times vary. Executive Director of Nutrition and Food Services, Donna Pittenger said, “Katy ISD continues to support families throughout the summerby providing free mealsto students throughout the district. Any child aged 18 and under can receive a free meal, regardless of whether they are a Katy ISD student.
According to the School Nutrition Association, one in five children in America live in homes without consistent meals. Programs such as the U.S Department of Agriculture’s summer food service program allow students in low-income communities free meals and snacks, but thankfully, on June 3, 2024, Katy ISD campuses started serving free breakfast and lunch with no requirements.
The REVISED summer meal schedule is as follows:
