Thurmond will discuss his latest book, "James Oglethorpe: Father of Georgia - A Founder’s Journey from Slave Trader to Abolitionist," providing attendees with a unique opportunity to gain fresh insights into the moral and philosophical evolution of Georgia’s founder, James Oglethorpe.
In his groundbreaking work, Thurmond draws on more than two decades of meticulous research and analysis to rewrite the prehistory of abolitionism, offering an important new chapter to Georgia’s origin story.

The book delves into Oglethorpe’s remarkable transformation from a slave trader to a fervent abolitionist, a journey significantly influenced by his relationships with two formerly enslaved Black men, Ayuba Suleiman Diallo and Olaudah Equiano. Through these friendships, Oglethorpe’s opposition to the Transatlantic slave trade was profoundly shaped, leading to his eventual advocacy for abolitionism.
