Why These Oreo Cake Cookies Work

For some reason this week I am obsessed with all thingscookies. Not just any cookies though. Easy cake mix cookies have become my favorite type of cookie to make.

They are easy to mix up, you can customize them with your favorite mix-ins, and they stay soft and chewy for days.

These cookies and cream cookies made with a cake mix, chocolate chips, and Oreo cookies are one of our daughter's favorite cookies. Of course, anything with cookies and cream is never a bad idea!

What are Cake Mix Cookies?

Cake mix cookies are a shortcut cookie made from using a store bought cake mix instead of regular dry ingredients.

Using just a few more ingredients, you can transform any flavor of cake mix into a soft delicious cookie.

The fun comes when you start deciding what extra ingredients you want to add to the cookie. Here is a list of some of our favorite mix-ins.

  • Candy - M&M's, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Butterfingers, Bunch a Crunch, Reese's Pieces, Peppermint Patties, Rolos
  • Dried Fruit - cherries, blueberries, cranberries, shredded coconut
  • Cookies - Oreos, Nutter Butters, Chips Ahoy, Animal Crackers
  • Chocolate Chips - white chocolate, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, butterscotch, peanut butter, mint, peppermint
  • Extras - Sprinkles, Nuts, Maraschino Cherries

Ingredients Needed

These cake mix Oreo cookies are so easy to make in minutes with a cake mix and a few other ingredients. Trust me and make a double batch because the cookies and cream goodness will disappear in a hurry.

  • Vanilla Cake Mix - You will only be using the dry powdered mix.
  • Butter - Set it out ahead of time, so it is soft enough to mix in.
  • Egg - Provides the moisture needed to create a soft cookie dough.
  • Cream Cheese - The secret ingredient that gives these cake mix cookies a soft and gooey texture.
  • Vanilla - Adds a splash of flavor.
  • Oreo Cookies - Chop or crush the cookies into chunks. Be careful not to crush them into crumbs when you mix them in.
  • Chocolate Chips - A mixture of white chocolate chips and milk chocolate chips is a good combo. Feel free to use whatever you like or have on hand.

Have an extra package of Oreos? Make these chocolate Oreo cookies or these Oreo brownies.

How to make Cookies and Cream Cookies

Cookies and Cream Cookies - Inside BruCrew Life (3)

The dough for these chocolate chip cookies and cream cookies comes together in minutes. Be sure to plan enough time because the dough does need some chill time before baking.

  1. Mix together the dry cake mix, butter, cream cheese, egg, and vanilla until a soft dough forms.
  2. Gently stir in chocolate chips and Oreo cookie chunks. Do not over mix.
  3. Refrigerate the cookie dough for at least 60 minutes. (2 hours is better.)
  4. Scoop dough into 24 even dough balls, roll into a ball, and bake.

Tips and Tricks

  • Adding cream cheese to the batter makes these white cake mix cookies taste like Oreo cheesecake cookies. Make sure you set the butter and cream cheese out ahead of time.
  • Feel free to use your favorite mix-ins. Today we went with Oreo cookie chunks and two kinds of chocolate chips. There is no right or wrong combo when it comes to these easy cake mix cookies.
  • Make sure you do not over bake them. They WILL look under done when the timer goes off! Trust me, and take them out of the oven.
  • These easy cookies and creme cookies will continue to bake on the hot baking sheet! Give the tops of the cookies a tap with a flat spatula after 2 minutes if they are too puffy. When they cool completely, they will be set up and ready to eat.

Storage Recommendations

You can make the dough for these cookies 1-2 days ahead of time. Keep the dough in a covered container in the refrigerator until ready to bake. You can also freeze the dough balls in a freezer bag. Thaw in the fridge before baking.

On the Counter - Store the baked cookies in a tightly sealed container once they have cooled completely.

In the Freezer - Baked cookies can also be made ahead of time and frozen for later. Place cookies in individual bags or in between layers of parchment paper in larger bags or containers. They will keep for 1-2 months in the freezer.

Holiday Variations

These cookies and cream cookies are so easy to customize for different holidays by using colored candies, sprinkles, and different flavors of Oreo cookies.

  • Chocolate Mint Cookies - chocolate cake mix, mint Oreos, mint M&Ms
  • 4th of July Cookies -vanilla cake mix, Oreo cookies, red white and blue M&Ms and sprinkles
  • Chocolate Halloween Cookies - chocolate cake mix, Oreos with orange frosting, Halloween M&M's
  • Peppermint Cookies - vanilla cake mix, Oreo cookies, peppermint crunch chips

I’ve made these cookies at least 4 times for cookouts and parties - the first party I brought them to, two grown men got into a fist fight over the last one and everyone was raving about them. One person referring to them as “crack”. Since that first time, each time I’ve brought them anywhere people are absolutely obsessed with them saying they’re “the best thing I’ve ever put in my mouth” 😂 thank you so much for this recipe!! It’s a hit everywhere I go, I highly recommend !!! 👏🏻

I'm not a fan of cream cheese? Would the recipe work without it? Or would you substitute anything else?

You will honestly not taste the cream cheese in these cookies at all. It just gives the dough a soft, tender texture. You could leave the cream cheese out and just bake them 9-10 minutes, if you are really opposed to trying it with the cream cheese.

I LOVE these cookies, as do all of my coworkers. Have you ever added nuts? Someone suggested it, I’m just not sure because they are already packed with such yumminess, but still…I’m curious.

I haven't tried these with nuts, but I think they would be delicious. If you do it, reduce the amount of cookies and/or chocolate chips to accommodate the extra nuts. Keep me posted on how they turn out!

Hi there, thanks for a great recipe. Going to try. I use cookie scoops - I'm lazy, it's less messy, faster and get even sized cookies. What size cookie scoop should be used pls? Or should I use TBSP, tsp size balls? Thanks can't wait!

    • Jocelyn

I usually use cookie scoops to get even balls too. I think mine is a 1 1/2 or 2 tablespoon scoop. I hope you enjoy the cookies!

How many days can I leave the cookies in the freezer?

    Reply

    • Jocelyn

Do mean the baked cookies? If you keep them in freezer safe bags or container, they will keep for 1-2 months. Just make sure to separate each layer with parchment or wax paper, so they do not freeze together.

Hey there! These look amazing! Quick question: can I leave the dough over night in my fridge? I’ve done it with regular cookie dough, but never with cake mix. Thanks!

    Reply

    • Jocelyn

You sure can! I've left the dough in the fridge for hours when I totally forgot to go back and bake it. It may be pretty solid after being in the fridge overnight, so you will need to let it sit out a few minutes so you can scoop it easily. The other option is to scoop the dough and put it on a tray and refrigerate that overnight. Then it's easy to just move them onto a baking sheet. I hope you enjoy the cookies!

Do you just smash real oreo cookies to get the cookie chunks? Or do you buy oreo cookie chunks that just have the cookie and no icing?

    • Jocelyn

I just bought Oreo cookies and chopped them up with a knife. Go ahead and leave the frosting them. I hope you enjoy the cookies!

These were mentioned in an article in Runner's World as an athlete's favorite cookie in college! So, I gotta give them a try. Curious...do you ever make them as bar cookies instead of scooping out dough balls?

    Reply

    • Jocelyn

No way! That's so cool that they were/are someone's favorite and they talked about it in an interview. I had no idea! I hope you do give them a try, as they are one of our top favorite cookies in our house. Although, I have never tried baking them as bar cookies. I'm sure it would work, but I can't give you an exact time for it. Keep me posted if you try it that way.

How long can you keep the dough in the fridge for the cookies and cream cookies?

    Reply

    • Jocelyn

It should keep for a few days in the refrigerator. I know I've left it for at least 2 days before baking it. I hope you enjoy the cookies.

These cookies were good, not great. Expensive ingredients for a cookie that didn't WOW me. The bake time (10 minutes) was accurate. I'd suggest making the balls a little bigger and then flattening them slightly, before they go into the oven.
Unfortunately if you're not a fan of the flavor of a cake mix, these cookies are going to be a bit overpowering. Nice to have on ice-cream, probably won't bother making again.
